Both of these works were produced collaboratively. Cairns Art Society members, in conjunction with the Cairns Museum, made works using objects in the Museum's collection with reference to the process leading up to the final works. The exhibition opens in November and runs until 9 March 2024.
Assemblage I shelves the chosen items. The artist’s impression of Trinity Beach looks like it was not rendered at the time it was seen but produced later, subject to the inaccuracy of memory. There is a suggestion that the original habitat has been cut back to make way for human progress in the axe, the crocodile skulls and the dog nails. The overall golden glow of the work is perhaps an amalgamation of past negatives into a memory we now view as positive.
Assemblage II is a pyramidic grouping which consists mainly of simple domestic appliances that underpinned daily life. The deep-sea fishing rod, the pluviograph and the calligraphic stamp are all objects which communicate through specialized languages.
